Civil Rights Group File Lawsuit Against Alabama

A civil rights group has filed a lawsuit against the state of Alabama, claiming that its law requiring voters to have photo identification will prevent thousands from casting ballots.  The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Greater Birmingham Ministries filed the federal lawsuit Wednesday.  The lawsuit cites estimates that at least 280,000 people will be disenfranchised because of the law.  The complaint says those affected are disproportionately African-American and Hispanic, and it says that amounts to intentional racial discrimination.  A requirement that went into effect last year requires voters to show valid, state-issued photo identification at polling places.

NPR Breakfast

National Public Radio's Michel Martin was the guest of honor Wednesday morning at a breakfast hosted by WVAS-FM.  Martin, the weekend host of NPR's "All Things Considered" hosted a program Tuesday night at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church.  She says the conversations about the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the civil rights should remain in the national spotlight.

Boycott Events

The week long salute to civil rights icon Rosa Parks and others for their roles in a Montgomery Bus Boycott 60 years ago continued Wednesday.  A program honoring civil rights leaser E.D. Nixon of Montgomery was held Wednesday at the Leila Barlow Theater on the Alabama State campus.  7th District Congresswoman Terri Sewell of Birmingham says the fight for civil rights is not over.

Guilty Pleas

A former Chilton County Sheriff's Deputy and teacher has pleaded guilty to half a dozen child sex charges.   41-year-old David Lee Hubbard of Clanton pleaded guilty Monday in Autauga County to four counts of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19; one count of enticing a child form immoral purposes; and a single count of child rape.  Hubbard's 35-year-old wife, Rebecca, has also pleaded guilty to child sex offenses.  District Attorney Randall Houston said David Hubbard's victims included six teenagers.  Houston said he's glad the victims won't have to testify in a trial.  A sentencing hearing is set for January 10th in Clanton.
