City Officials Mull Recycling Future

Mayor Todd Strange says he and other city leaders are looking for ways to reopen a state of the art recycling facility in north Montgomery.  Operators of the Infinitus Renewable Energy Park on Louisville Street unexpectedly shut down the plant earlier this month blaming low commodity places.  At a news conference Thursday, the mayor outlined several possible outcomes.

Thanksgiving Tragedy

A Montgomery County grand jury returned an indictment this week that charges a man for a deadly crash in west Montgomery that left two people dead on Thanksgiving Day 2014.  41-year-old Marquis Coleman was indicted Wednesday on two counts of murder, first-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.  The indictment alleges that Coleman ran a stop sign at the corners of Rosa Parks and Edgemont avenues and crashed into another vehicle.  Two elderly female passengers in the second car were killed.  Authorities said Coleman fled on foot but he was apprehended several blocks from the crash site.  Coleman is due in court November 23rd for a hearing.

Kent Sentencing

A southwest Alabama man accused of being part of an incestuous family sex ring is going to prison.  A Baldwin County judge sentenced 39-year-old Dustin Kent to 17 years in prison during a hearing Thursday in Bay Minette.  Kent is an uncle of missing Mobile teenager Brittney Wood, who was last seen in 2012 and is presumed dead.  He pleaded guilty to incest and sodomy in Baldwin County.  Authorities believe the 19-year-old Wood was among the young victims of a group of relatives and friends who sexually abused their own children and swapped them for sex for years.

World Record

A team of Montgomery firefighters set a new world record Thursday at the Firefighter Combat Challenge event.  The Blue team set a world record Thursday in the relay event with a time of one minute five seconds.  It was the third world record set this week by Montgomery Fire-Rescue teams who are defending their 2014 title.  The Firefighter Combat Challenge resumes today with teams vying for a chance to compete in Saturday's final races. ESPN is televising the event.

Rejected Proposals

Proposals to expand a racing park in north Montgomery and a plan to build a state ABC store near the Dalraida neighborhood were rejected by the Montgomery Planning Commission Thursday night.  The planning commission said no to a project that would add dirt tracks for go-kart and motorcycle racing at Montgomery Motorsports Park on the Northern Boulevard.  Commissioners also sided with homeowners who objected to a proposed state liquor store in a new shopping complex near the Dalraida community.  Despite the setback, developers can still appeal the decisions to the Montgomery City Council.
