Census Figures Offer Snapshot of 2008 Voters

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - U.S. Census figures show almost 190,000
more women than men went to the polls in Alabama in the 2008
presidential election.
The census figures released Monday show that 1,843,000 women
voted compared to 1,654,000 men in the 2008 presidential election.
That means 65 percent of women registered to vote went to the polls
in Alabama compared to 56 percent of registered male voters.
In the 2008 election when Barack Obama was elected to be the
first black president, 62.5 percent of black voters went to the
polls compared to 62.4 of registered white voters who cast ballots.
Overall almost 61 percent of registered voters in Alabama cast
ballots.
