By More than half of Dallas County kids in poverty
Tuscaloosa, AL – U.S. Census estimates show that more
than half of the children in Dallas County in Alabama's Black Belt
region live in poverty.
The manager of the State Data Center at the University of
Alabama, Annett Watters, says that the figures showed that almost
53 percent of the children in Dallas County were living below
poverty.
The figures showed close to 50 percent of the children in Perry
and Wilcox counties were also living below the poverty line and
that in 17 of Alabama's 54 counties at least one-third of children
were living in poverty.
Watters said the poverty figures are used by the federal
government as one factor in determining funding to local school
districts.
