Carver High School Traffic

A Montgomery school principal is pleading with Montgomery's mayor and City Council to make changes at the intersection of Oak Street and Fairview Avenue.  Gary Hall, the principal of Carver High School, says the traffic signal does not have a left turn arrow and he fears for the safety of his students.  A Carver student sustained minor injuries Wednesday morning after being involved in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection.  Hall said he wants the problem addressed after a student was critically injured last week near Capitol Heights Middle School.

Identity Theft Arrests

Federal prosecutors say another group of Montgomery area residents are facing federal prison terms for identity theft and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government.  According to U.S. Attorney George Beck, Cruz Burnett, Jacorey Giddens and Roderick Howard all pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme from March 2011 to April 2013 in which they used stolen names to file more than 500 false tax returns.  No sentencing date was announced.  Burnett, Giddens and Howard each face of up to 10 years in federal prison.

More Reward Money

The reward money is now up to $3,000.  Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is appealing to the public for tips that will lead police to the individuals who vandalized the apartment where Rosa Parks lived in the 1950's.  Authorities said thieves stole copper wiring from several units at the Cleveland Court Housing Community.  The thefts occurred on Monday, August 25th.  If you have information about the thefts, call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.  Your tip may lead to a cash reward.

Minimum Wage

Fast-food workers and activists who want a raise in the minimum wage are planning to strike this week in Opelika and elsewhere across the country.  The Opelika-Auburn news reports that representatives with the group "Low Pay is not OK" announced that a strike would take place this morning in Opelika's Tiger Town area.  The group is calling for employees to strike at some of Opelika's major fast-food restaurants, including McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King.  Nationwide, fast-food restaurants today are expected to be targeted as labor organizers escalate their campaign to unionize the industry's workers.
