'Brown Bomber' statute unveiled in LaFayette

By East Ala town dedicates statute of Joe Louis

Montgomery, AL – - An 8-foot bronze statue of champion boxer
Joe Louis has been unveiled in his Alabama hometown.
The statue on a base of Alabama red granite was erected outside
the Chambers County Courthouse on Saturday in Lafayette.
The boxer's son, Joe Louis Barrow Jr., and other family members
attended the unveiling in the town of about 3,000. Residents raised
about $60,000 over three years to honor Louis.
Most associate Joe Louis' upbringing with Detroit and overlook
his Alabama roots. He was born into a sharecropper family and
raised in the Buckaloo Mountain community until his family moved to
Detroit when he was 12.
In Detroit, a 24-foot bronze arm and fist was sculpted in his
