Organizers say Sunday's Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma is the start of a new campaign to lobby Congress to restore a section of the Voting Rights Act that was removed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Last year justices abolished the preclearance provision that required deep South states to get federal approval of their election laws. Organizers expect next year's Bridge Crossing Jubilee to attract a larger crowd to celebrate the event's 50th anniversary.
Accused Killer
An Autauga County man is behind bars accused of killing his father. The Montgomery Advertiser reports the Autagua County Sheriff's Office is investigating Friday night's shooting death of 64-year-old John Lewis Woods Jr. Investigators told the newspaper that the elder Woods was slain at a residence on Autauga County One in the Statesville Community. Arrested was 35-year-old John Lewis Woods the third. He was charged with murder and placed in the Autauga Metro Jail. It was the county's first homicide of the year.
Police Shooting
Alexander City Police and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are probing a fatal police involved shooting. Authorities said an officer responded to a fight between two males outside a Huddle House restaurant early Saturday morning. Police said one of the men involved in the fracas got into his vehicle and drove toward an officer, who fired his weapon. The driver was transported to UAB Hospital where he died. The Alexander City Outlook newspaper identified the deceased motorist as Emerson Crayton Jr.
Home School Sports
Some parents of home-schooled children are supporting proposed legislation that would allow their kids to play competitive sports with public school students. The Montgomery Advertiser reports a home-schooled 15-year-old Dothan boy tried out for a local high school football team and practiced with the squad until he was told he was ineligible to play days before the first game. The Alabama High School Athletic Association requires students to be enrolled in the school they're representing to play sports.
