Boy Fatally Shot

Opelika police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a male juvenile.  The shooting happened just before 1 o'clock Monday afternoon on Edmon Avenue.  Emergency personnel took the boy to East Alabama Medical Center, where he later died while in surgery.  Police declined to release his name, and have not released further details about the circumstances of the shooting. 

2014 Kids Count

Alabama and the nation's children will be in the spotlight in the 2014 National Kids Count Data boo, which will be released later today.  The annual Alabama Kids Count Survey by the non-profit organization, Voices for Alabama's Children, tracks the latest trends on the overall well-being of the state's children and ranks the 67 Alabama counties according to 16 indicators, education; economic well-being; health, family and community. 

Birmingham Blowout

Members of the National Democratic Party were wined and dined last night by Birmingham City officials who are looking to land a big prize, the 2016 Democratic National Convention.  A 14 member committee from the party arrived in Alabama's largest city Monday for a two-day visit to assess whether Birmingham could host the massive gathering. 

SGA Letter

The president of the Alabama State University Student Government Association has sent a letter asking the Chairman Elton Dean and Vice Chairman Marvin Wiggins of the Board of Trustees to resign.  SGA President Darren Dubose says the SGA Cabinet decided it was time to act when an accrediting agency raised several concerns.  Dean said the letter was a surprise and he needs time to digest it before commenting.  Wiggins, a Circuit Judge in Dallas County, was in court and unavailable for comment.  ASU President Dr.  Gwendolyn Boyd said she supports students' rights to voice their opinions and be active on university issues.
