Body Cameras Arrive in Montgomery

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is among the latest law enforcement agencies in Alabama to received its first shipment of body cameras.  Sheriff Derrick Cunningham has received his order of 86 body cameras for patrol deputies and correction officers.  He tells the Montgomery Advertiser that he's pleased the six-month wait is over.  Sheriff Cunningham said he researched buying the cameras well before the outcry for more transparency.  Martha Earnhardt, a spokeswoman for the Montgomery Department of Public Safety, tells the paper that paperwork is being finalized to purchase 300 body cameras for patrol officers.  

Murder Suspect Captured

State and county law enforcement officers have captured a Bibb County man wanted for kidnapping his estranged girlfriend and killing her sister.  Bibb County District Attorney Michael Jackson says 60-year-old John Barry Hubbard of Centreville was arrested Wednesday night at a motel in Eutaw.  Jackson says Hubbard's estranged girlfriend Tammy Carpenter, also of Centreville, is safe and was not injured.  Authorities said Hubbard went to Carpenter's home in Brent on Tuesday afternoon and forced her into his truck before fatally shooting her sister, 30-year-old Kandi Murphy.  Jackson say Hubbard is charged with capital murder and kidnapping.  He's being held without bond in the Green County Jail.  

Hepatitis C Education

A New York based health care advocate says Tuskegee will participate in a national effort to educate African-Americans about Hepatitis C.  C. Virginia Fields, the president of the National Black Leadership Commission on Aids, will join Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford Friday to announced a program aimed at reducing HCV infection in black communities.  Hepatitis C is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation.  It is the leading cause of death for African Americans over the age of 45.  

Inmate Death Investigation

The death of an inmate in the Lowndes County Jail is under investigation.  The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an inquiry after 65-year-old James Scarbrough of Warm Springs, Georgia, died in custody on Tuesday.  Scarbrough was recently indicted on a murder charge in connection with the stabbing death of his wife last October on Interstate 65 in Lowndes County.
