Black Congressman rejects screening processes

By Artur Davis tells group he won't take part in endorsement screenings

Montgomery, AL – - A congressman trying to become Alabama's
first black governor says he won't participate in the screening
processes for three predominantly black political groups because
black voters need no permission and no sample ballots to decide who
to support for governor.
U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham announced his decision
Wednesday after two leaders of the Alabama New South Coalition said
Davis appeared to be the front-runner for the group's support until
he voted against the federal health care plan. President Robert
Avery and President Emeritus Hank Sanders say the group's
endorsement on Saturday is too close to call between Davis and
state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks.
Davis says he won't participate in the screening processes for
the New South Coalition, Alabama Democratic Conference or the
Jefferson County Citizens Coalition.
