Bitterly Cold

Be ready to bundle up in the coming days, forecasters say bitterly cold temperatures will dominate Alabama's weather as early as Friday as a strong cold front is expected to usher in a blast of winter weather.  The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather advisory today that projects much colder than average temperatures lasting into early next week.  It is expected to get even colder early next week.

City Towing

A new Montgomery City ordinance has gone into effect with the start of the new year.  The so-called towing ordinance was approved in November by the Montgomery City Council.  Councilman Jon Down previously said the ordinance will crack down on motorists who don't have insurance.

Fatal Shooting

Authorities in Crenshaw County said a Troy University student was shot to death on New Year's Day.  Crenshaw Count District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer said authorities took 19-year-old Taylor Driggers of Brantley into custody after the Wednesday morning shooting of 18-year-old Kristin Fuller of Luverne.  Tesmer said the shooting happened at a residence just off Highway 29, near Luverne.  Fuller is the second Troy University student to die this week because of gun violence.  21-year-old Kimberle Johnson of Montgomery, a junior at Troy, was slain last Saturday at the now-closed Centennial Hill Bar and Grill on Highland Avenue.

Funeral Services

Funeral services will be held Saturday for the two people who were shot to death at a bar on Highland Avenue.  Services for 22-year-old Glenn Thomas, also know as rapper Doe-B, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church on Rosa Parks Avenue.  A funeral service for 21-year-old Kimberle Johnson will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at True Divine Baptist Church on Troy Highway.  Meanwhile, Mayor Todd Strange said the city has no legal authority to tear down the Centennial Hill Bar and Grill on Highland Avenue where Thomas and Johnson were slain.  Six others were wounded.  The mayor's comments came after he received an electronic petition with more than 2,000 names.  It encourages the city to tear down the building.
