Bill Seeks to Remove State BOE from Commission Process

Alabama lawmakers could consider a bill that would remove the state Board of Education from the process of confirming a commission that will oversee new charter schools.  Republican Representative Terri Collins filed the bill Thursday after several board members declined to confirm a number of nominees.  Collins says the bill is necessary to make sure the commission is in place by the June 1st deadline.

Suspect Hospitalized

Alabama state troopers say a man accused of hitting a trooper during a traffic stop is hospitalized after being shot.  Department spokesman Curtis Summerville says a 38-year-old man was stopped for speeding on a freeway in Huntsville and hit the trooper before he pulled away.  Summerville says the trooper shot and wounded the man as he fled the scene.  Authorities say police later found the injured man at his home and he was taken to Huntsville Hospital.  It's unclear if charges have been filed against him.  Summerville says the trooper wasn't injured.

Marijuana Found

An Alabama man stumbled upon a 10-pound package of marijuana that washed up on the beach.  Multiple news outlets report that Ron Smith was taking a morning walk near the Cotton Bayou Beach access in Orange Beach on Tuesday when he noticed what he thought was a seat cushion floating in the water.  Upon closer inspection, he realized that package was actually a bag full of compressed marijuana.  Smith called police, who picked up the package.  Authorities say the bag was worth about $8,000.
