Bentley Vetos General Fund Budget

Governor Robert Bentley has vetoed a general fund budget that he said would hurt the people of Alabama.  Bentley says the budget approved by lawmakers Thursday night is unworkable and will hurt the state.  He vowed to bring lawmakers back into special session this summer.  The budget cuts $200 million from state agencies after lawmakers failed to agree on tax increases or revenue.  The House of Representatives overrode Bentley's veto, but the Senate had adjourned for the session so the action was meaningless.  The veto leaves state agencies without a spending plan for fiscal year that begins Oct. 1st.

 MPD Investigation

After two recent killings that Montgomery residents indicated could be gang-related, the Montgomery Police Department is joining forces with U.S. Marshals to counter possible gang-like activity in the city.  During a Montgomery City Council work session, Public Safety Director Chris Murphy told council members that the MPD would be joining forces with the U.S. Marshals Service to form a working group to hold meetings and discuss initiatives to counter gang-like violence in Montgomery.  The first meeting was held Thursday and additional meetings could follow.

ASU Bill

The Alabama Legislature gave final passage to a bill Thursday that reorganizes the Alabama Sate University Board of Trustees.  The House approved the legislation on a 95-0 vote.  The legislation now goes to Governor Robert Bentley for his signature.  The bill would add two at large positions to the ASU Board of Trustees, both of which could be held by out of state residents.  Trustee's terms would also be cut from 12 years per term to six.  The bill would also establish a nominating committee for trustees, and bring ASU trustees travel reimbursements in line with other colleges and universities.
