Bentley Signs Education Budget

Governor Robert Bentley has signed the state's nearly $6 billion education budget for the next fiscal year.  Bentley announced Tuesday that he had signed the spending plan that includes an additional $10 million to expand the state's prekindergarten program.

Racial Accusations

Judges say they will only look at accusations of racial gerrymandering as they review Alabama's legislative districts for a second time.  The U.S. Supreme Court in March said the lower court must take another look at whether Alabama's Republican-led legislature relied too heavily on race in drawing the lines.  Black lawmakers challenged the plan, saying it limited minority voting power by packing black voters into designated districts.

Voluntary Agreement

Blue Bell Creameries says it has entered a voluntary agreement with the Alabama Department of Public Health that includes requiring the company to inform the state whenever there is a positive test result for listeria in its products or ingredients.  The Alabama agreement is similar to those the company reached last month with two other states.

ASU Cheerleading Clinic

More than 100 young girls will participate this week at Alabama State University's Youth Cheer Clinic.  Coordinators say students from 4-year olds to 17-year olds are registered for the instructional cheer and dance training.  Clinics are held through Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night.  Friday night will feature a performance by the cheerleaders displaying what they have learned.  That takes place at 6 p.m. at the ASU Lockhart Gymnasium.
