Bentley Plans to call Special Session in September

Governor Robert Bentley plans to call a special session sometime in September.  He says he will promote essentially the same tax proposals as he did in the last session.  But he told reporters Wednesday that he will not accept a shift in use tax funds from the Education Trust Fund without a plan to replenish that money.  The governor spoke to a meeting of the Alabama Health Care Improvement Task Force Wednesday.  He urged them to contact their local senators and representatives on behalf of his budget plan.

Bond Memorial

Members of the public are invited to join the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP in honoring the life of civil rights leader Julian Bond.  A ceremony is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Civil Rights Memorial on Washington Avenue this Saturday.  Bond's family is holding a burial at sea in the Gulf of Mexico at 2 p.m. Saturday.  The private ceremony is meant to coincide with the public gathering at the memorial so that residents can participate in honoring the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center.  Bond died last Saturday in Fort Walton Beach at the age of 75.

Black Film Festival

Alabama State University's annual Black Film Festival is set to take the screen on Aug. 28 and Aug.29 in Montgomery.  The free, two-day event, which is sponsored by the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture, will feature screening of various films at the Levi Watkin's Learning Center as well as the Capri Theatre.  The first 100 guests on Saturday will receive free popcorn and soda.

Firearm Accident

Police in the Birmingham suburb of Hoover say a 2-year-old boy apparently shot and killed his father in  what authorities are calling a horrible accident.  Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector says investigators have all but ruled out suicide and other scenarios in the shooting.  Rector says an autopsy is being conducted Wednesday on the 31-year-old man.  He was found shot once in the head in an apartment on Tuesday afternoon, and no one else was inside other than the toddler.
