April is Autism Awareness Month

Autisum ID Cards Available

Alabama residents who have been diagnosed with autism can apply to receive an identification card that can be used to better communicate with first responders and law enforcement officers during potentially stressful situations.  A statement from the Alabama Department of Public Health on Thursday says the card explains to others that the person may have difficulty communicating or understanding directions.  The billfold-size card also says the person may become agitated if touched.  To apply for the card, members of the public can go to the agency's website to print a registration form and bring it to any county health department.

Environmental Park

Genetta Park, at the corner of West Fairview Avenue and I-65, will now be known as Fairview Environmental Park.  Under construction for the last three years, the park held its grand opening Thursday.  Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said the park will serve as a filter for stormwater runoff into Genetta stream.  The park was funded primarily through grants from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

Poultry Clean-up

Police say a truck spilled smelly chicken parts all over an Alabama street, closing the road for hours as workers tried to clean the mess and contain the stench.  WHNT-TV reports that county emergency officials say the truck driver hit his brakes to avoid a wreck Thursday in Albertville but ended up spilling the chicken parts at an intersection.  The parts are byproducts from a chicken processing plant.
