ASU's New Organizational Chart
The Alabama State University Board of Trustees approved the new organizational chart Friday proposed by president Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd. Dr. Boyd says she's pleased to have a vote of confidence and believes this new chart is a major step in the right direction.
Federal forecasters are predicting a slower than usual hurricane season this year because of an expected El Nino system or cooler waters in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expect about eight to 13 named tropical storms and three to six hurricanes. Just one or two major hurricanes are forecast. A new mapping tool will keep coastal residents updated on the storm surge threat in their communities.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has warned 96 Alabama school systems that they are violating federal guidelines by discouraging enrollment based on immigration status. The group sent a letter to state schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice asking him to ensure all schools comply with federal mandates by the start of the 2014-15 school year. SPLC attorney Jay Singh said all children have a right to attend public schools regardless of immigration status.
The companies behind the movie "Selma" say principal photography has begun and the movie is being shot in Atlanta, Selma and Montgomery. "Selma" is the story of Martin Luther King Jr.'s voting rights struggle that culminated with the march from Selma to Montgomery and enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
