ASU Interpretive Center Groundbreaking Ceremony

A ground breaking ceremony was held Thursday for the Selma to Montgomery March National Parks Service Interpretive Center that will be built on the Alabama State University campus.  The National Park Service said the ASU site will become the third interpretive center to be built along the Montgomery Voting Rights Trail, joining others in Selma and White Hall in Lowndes County.  The ASU Interpretive Center will be constructed near the new football stadium. 

CrimeStoppers Milestone

The Central Alabama CrimeStoppers program is working.  The anti-crime agency has hit a major milestone, giving more than $100,000 in reward money since May of 1997.  Tony Garrett, Development Director, says the calls that flood into his office are extremely valuable.  Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is a non-profit organization that depends solely on donations. 

VA Monitoring

Second District Congresswoman Martha Roby is calling for national oversight of the Central Alabama VA Health Care System to ensure that promised reforms are carried out.  Roby outlined her concerns to VA Secretary Robert McDonald.  The Montgomery Republican said she is concerned that reform efforts may be undermined. 

Teeth Whitening

Businesses are asking a Birmingham judge to overturn an Alabama law restricting teeth-whitening services outside of dentist's offices.  Lawyers for a North Carolina man and an Alabama woman asked a Jefferson County judge Thursday to declare the law unconstitutional.  They say teeth whitening is safe and dentists are creating a monopoly.  The state dental board is defending the law.  The judge says she'll rule later.
