Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour are expected across much of the state today. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this evening for much of central and northern Alabama. Forecasters say sustained winds of 24 miles per hour or higher can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
Grand Opening
A grand opening ceremony was held Monday afternoon for the Infinitus Renewable Energy Park in north Montgomery. The new recycling plant will collect and process all of city's solid waste recycling 85 percent to use for commodities like energy. The $35 million dollar facility will employ about 100 people and will open in early May.
Fourth Homicide
Montgomery Police are investigating the city's fourth homicide of the year. Detectives say a fatal shooting Friday night claimed the life of 35-year-old Derrick Varner of Norman Bridge Road. MPD said Varner was shot near the intersection of Stephens and Oakland streets. Authorities have determined that a second gunshot victim was shot in the same area. The adult male's injury was not life threatening. Montgomery Police said the shootings are related and were a result of an argument between the two victims and other subjects. No arrests have been made.
Monthly Premiums
The board that oversees Alabama's health insurance plan for education employees has voted to keep employees' monthly premiums and copays the same for the next school year. Monday's vote by the Public Education Employees' Health Insurance board affects nearly 82,000 education employees and nearly 123,000 spouses and children.
