Alabama's Unemployment Rate Rises Slightly

Alabama's jobless rate is on the rise again, but just slightly.  The jobless rate announced Friday for July 6.2 percent; that's one-tenth of a percent higher than the rates for May and June.  Shelby County recorded the lowest unemployment rate among the state at 4.6 percent.  Wilcox County has the highest jobless rte at 16.2 percent.  

Cyber College

Two of Alabama's U.S. Representatives were given an update and tour of the preparations at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base to establish a Cyber College there.  The formation of the Air Force Cyber College was announced earlier this year.  President and Commander of Air University Lt. Gen. Steve Kwast says the operation will be more of a cyberspace learning environment than an actual brick and mortar classroom.  Congressman Mike Rogers, Congresswoman Martha Roby and Mayor Todd Strange attended the event.  

Leonard Appeal

An Opelika-Auburn newspaper reports a Montgomery man is appealing his convictions in the shooting deaths of two former Auburn football players and a third man.  Desmonte Leonard is asking the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to overturn his conviction in the 2012 killings.  His attorney recently filed the appeal.  Leonard is serving life without parole after being convicted last year of fatally shooting three people during a party at an Auburn apartment complex in June 2012.
