Alabama's Senators Consider Millions in Pet Projects

Montgomery, Alabama –
(AP) - Alabama's two U.S. senators - Richard
Shelby and Jeff Sessions, both Republicans, each have about $400
million in funding requests for special projects in Alabama next
year.
The Birmingham News reviewed the requests and found that most of
them steered toward high-tech defense contractors and university
researchers.
This is the first year senators have been required to disclose
their earmark requests at the front end of the appropriations
process, well before the final bills are written.
Shelby, of Tuscaloosa, has 63 requests totaling more than $392
million. Sessions, of Mobile, has 116 projects that would be worth
more than $411 million. Some projects appear on both senators'
lists.
