Alabama Wreath Laying Ceremony

Governor Robert Bentley placed a wreath at Alabama's Fallen Heroes Memorial wall Monday in tribute to America's fallen service members.  The 6th annual ceremony was held in Alabama in observance of the National Wreaths Across America Day, which falls on Saturday, December 13th this year.  Bentley says he's honored to have participated in the ceremony for the past four years.  Bentley encourages everyone to take a moment during the holiday season to thank veterans for their service.

Toy Guns Ban

The Birmingham-based Outcast Voters League will be touring the nation smashing toy guns at various capitols to raise awareness of gun violence and children.  League president, Frank Matthews says the project began after two separate incidents of toy-gun related deaths involving police in Ohio.  Matthews says he hopes the "Guns Are Not Toys" tour will promote conversation and positive action.  The tour will last 13 months; the group will be at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery on Dec. 27th.

Federal Lawsuit

Eufaula officials have filed a federal lawsuit to try stopping a highway through the city's historic district from being widened to four lanes.  Mayor Jack Tibbs says the city filed the suit Monday in Montgomery with the help of the Eufaula Heritage Association, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and others.   The opponents say the widening will damage the historic charm of the mansions that line the two-lane road.  U.S. 431 is four lanes from Interstate 65 in Opelika to the Florida line except for the 0.7 mile stretch through the historic district.  The Department of Transportation says it is the busiest section of two-lane highway in the state and a bottleneck for traffic headed to the Florida Panhandle.  Widening work is schedule to being later this month.
