Alabama State trustees rename Acadome
By ASU trustee board renames several sports facilities, including Acadome
Montgomery, AL – - Alabama State University trustees have
renamed a campus arena in honor of two former basketball coaches.
The decision follows their 2008 vote to strip the name of a
prominent black political leader from the building.
The board voted Thursday to name the arena the Dunn-Oliver
Acadome, in memory of the two deceased coaches, Charles Johnson
"C.J." Dunn and James V. Oliver.
In May 2008, the board voted to remove the name of Joe Reed from
the domed building, which was known at the time as the Joe L. Reed
That vote came amid conflict between the board and Reed, who had
sued challenging severance pay for an outgoing president.
Other sports facilities on the ASU campus also were renamed. The
tennis complex will be called the Arthur Dennis Barnett Centre Court; the university's football complex will be known as the Houston Markham football complex; and the school's track and field at Hornet Stadium was renamed the Horace Crump Track.
