Alabama Senate Oks Charter Schools

Republicans in the state Senate and House have approved legislation they consider to be a top priority in this year's session.  Last night, the Alabama Senate, on a 22-12 vote, approved a charter school bill over the objections of some Democrats.  Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh dismissed critics who wanted to remove a provision that would let charter schools hire non-certified teachers.  In the Alabama House, a jobs incentives package pushed by Governor Robert Bentley was approved Tuesday.  State Representative John Knight said he is upset because Democrats were not consulted about the jobs bill.  

Waffle House Shooting

Gun-related violence outside a Waffle House restaurant has left one man dead and another in police custody.  According to Montgomery Police Sgt. Denise Barnes the fatal shooting occurred sometime after 4:00 a.m. at a Waffle House on the West South Boulevard.  The victim's identity is being withheld and MPD said they are questioning a suspect.  Authorities could release additional information later Wednesday about the fatal shooting.  

Puppy Beheadings

A west Alabama prosecutor say two teenagers are facing cruelty charges after they were accused of beheading three puppies with a machete and posting video on social media.  District Attorney Michael Jackson says a caller alerted police after seeing the video last Thursday on Snapchat.  Jackson said the Wilcox County Sheriff's Department arrested 18-year-old Ashley Johnston and an unnamed 17-year-old male.  Both teens are student at Wilcox Academy.  

Helicopter Crash

A military official says seven Marines and four soldiers are presumed dead after their Army helicopter crashed last night over water in the Florida Panhandle.  The Black Hawk helicopter was conducting a routine training missing when the aircraft was reported missing around 8:30 Tuesday night.  Searchers have found debris from the crash.  The seven Marines were stationed at Camp LeJuene, North Carolina.  The four soldiers assigned to a National Guard unit in Hammond, Louisiana.
