Drought is quickly spreading across Alabama.  Statistics show about two-thirds of the state is abnormally dry and about 10 percent of the state is in a moderate drought.  State climatologist John Christy says things could improve since rain chances increase this weekend.

Stand Down Event

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System is holding its annual Stand Down for Homeless Veterans through Friday.  Vendors that offer an array of services to veterans are on hand.  It takes place again on Friday, August 29th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Montgomery State Farmers Market at 1655 Federal Drive.

New Addition

A new warehouse opened Thursday at the Montgomery Area Food Bank.  Governor Robert Bentley along with city and community leaders participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the $2 million dollar addition.  The Hugh K. Rule Junior building will house extra food to distribute to the more than eight hundred agencies in the state.  The new 23,000 square foot facility has three shipping and receiving docks, offices, a freezer/cooler and a volunteer service center.

Director Needed

The Alabama Ethics Commission is searching for a new director.  Meanwhile, commissioners have offered the job on an interim basis.  Members voted to offer the position of acting director to former Cumberland Law School Dean John Carroll, who is a former federal magistrate judge in Montgomery.  The commission's long time director, Jim Sumner, is retiring October 1st.
