Ala senate overrides gov veto on worker furlough plan

By Senate rejects furlough plan for state employees

Montgomery, AL – - The Alabama Senate has voted to override
a veto by Gov. Bob Riley and block a plan that would have let state
agencies temporarily furlough state employees to avoid layoffs.
The Senate voted 20-11 Tuesday to stop the furlough plan. The
plan had been opposed by the Alabama State Employees Association.
The issue now goes to the House. House members also must vote to
override the veto or the furlough plan will take effect.
The State Personnel Board approved a plan last year that would
have allowed state agencies to furlough employees for up to 24 days
a year to reduce payroll costs. The House and Senate passed a
resolution earlier this year to keep the plan from taking effect.
