Ala senate delays vote on roads, bridges construction bill

By Ala. Republicans postpone vote on jobs bill, debate to resume Thursday

Montgomery, AL – - The Alabama Senate will need a second
day to debate a proposal for spending $1 billion on road and bridge
construction projects.
The Senate voted 20-13 Tuesday to begin discussion of the
legislation proposed by Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron of Fyffe. His
plan ran into criticism from some Republicans, who got the Senate
to recess late Tuesday afternoon without taking a final vote. The
debate will resume at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Barron's plan would take $100 million per year from a state
savings account called the Alabama Trust Fund. The withdrawals
would last for a decade, and the money would be used for road and
bridge projects statewide.
Barron said his proposal would create 30,000 jobs. Some
Republicans say the state doesn't need to be spending its savings
account.
