By Corrections comm. defends agency's record on reporting prison violence
Montgomery, AL – - Alabama's corrections commissioner is
denying that his department intentionally underreported violence at
maximum-security Donaldson prison.
Inmate lawyers said Wednesday that previously confidential
prison system records prove Alabama's corrections agency routinely
underreports fights, stabbings and beatings at the maximum-security
lockup.
Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen denies that the agency
intentionally underreported violence. But the department isn't
saying whose numbers are correct - the ones published by the prison
system or the ones compiled by inmate attorneys.
A spokesman for a group for prison officers, the Alabama
Correctional Organization, says an investigation is needed.
