Ala lawmakers save prepaid college tuition plan

By financially struggling program to get infusion of money

Montgomery, AL – - The Legislature has made a final-hours
fix to a problem with a bill it passed to save Alabama's prepaid
college tuition plan.
State attorneys realized the bill contained language that
violated federal regulations, and the governor recommended the
Legislature remove one paragraph from it Thursday, the last meeting
day of the 2010 sesssion. The Senate agreed 24-0 and then the House
voted 94-6.
Gov. Bob Riley signed the bill into law. It will pump nearly
$548 million into the financially troubled plan over the next 17
years.
