By Survey: Legislators can't agree on need for employee furloughs
Montgomery, AL – - Alabama Legislators are divided and many
are undecided about a proposal to allow state agencies to give
employees unpaid leave to avoid layoffs during tough economic
times.
An Associated Press survey of legislators found only 32 percent
of House members responding support furloughs, and in the Senate,
just 28 percent support the idea.
Legislators may be asked to vote on a policy proposed by the
state Personnel Department that would allow state agencies to
furlough employees for up to 24 days a year to reduce payroll
costs.
With the recession causing budget cuts, some state agencies are
expected to face layoffs to save money.
