Ala House approves so-called paw- paw bill

By Legislation seeks to ensure rights of grandparents

Montgomery, AL – - The Alabama House has passed a bill
allowing grandparents to seek visitation rights with their
grandchildren even if the parent related to the grandparents had
given up or lost parental rights.
The House voted 99-0 for the bill Thursday. The sponsor,
Republican Rep. Harry Shiver of Bay Minette, said it will make it
possible for grandparents to keep in contact with their
grandchildren.
Democratic Rep. Yusuf Salaam of Selma said the issue was
important because often grandparents are the "stabilizing force"
in the lives of their grandchildren. Salaam called the legislation
the "Paw-Paw bill."
It now goes to the Senate.
