Ala gov rejects attempt to block worker furlough plan

By Gov. Riley vetoes resolution that blocks employee furloughs

Montgomery, AL – - Gov. Bob Riley is vetoing a resolution
passed by the Alabama Legislature that blocked a furlough plan for
state employees.
A policy approved by the State Personnel Board last year would
have allowed state agencies to furlough employees for up to 24 days
a year to reduce payroll costs. The House and Senate passed a
resolution earlier this month that kept the plan from taking
effect.
The Personnel Board said the furlough plan was a way to avoid
layoffs in a recession. The Alabama State Employees Association
said it would be the same as asking workers to take pay cuts.
Riley said the only option that state agencies have during tough
budget times is layoffs. He said furloughs would be better because
workers would keep their jobs.
