2016 Primary Results

Most of the incumbents did very well in Alabama Tuesday, U.S. Senator Richard Shelby had no trouble fending off four Republican challengers, he faces Democratic opposition in November.  Other Republican Congressional incumbents fared equally as well, Martha Roby, Mike Rogers, Bradley Byrne and Robert Aderholt all brushed aside their primary competition.

The leadership of the state's Supreme Court will remain the same with the incumbent justice cruising to victory and two others running unopposed.  Public Service Commission President Twinkle Cavanaugh will hold onto that title as she overcame a challenge from former commissioner Terry Dunn.  However, two incumbents serving in the Alabama Board of Education, Matt Brown and Jeff Newman, the board's vice president are headed for runoffs after losing primary races to Republican challengers.  Other Board members, Stephanie Bell and Ella Bell scored comfortable wins.

Voters also approved a proposed amendment to the state Constitution to authorize the Legislature to replace a retirement system for judges, state Supreme Court justices, circuit clerks and district attorneys who are elected or appointed after Nov. 8th.
