13 year-old faces Murder Charges

Montgomery Police say a second male is facing criminal charges in connection with a homicide that occurred last week on Highland Avenue.  Sgt. Denise Barnes, a police spokeswoman, said Detectives are withholding the 13-year-old suspect's name for the time being.  Police have already charged Frederick Simmons with capital murder for the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Nathan Dasher.  The victim was slain in the 2500 block of Highland Avenue.

City Council

The Montgomery City Council held its weekly session Tuesday evening.  Among the issues addressed was a resolution of an official apology to members of the Lincoln Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority.  Three of the authority's five representatives resigned last month after the city allowed a burial at the overcrowded cemetery on Harrison Road.  In other city council business, One Court Square and other downtown properties will be sold to a company called Marjam for $2.5 million.

No FEMA Shelter

A federal facility in east Alabama is no longer being considered as a site to house undocumented child immigrants from Central Alabama.  Al.com reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has notified Republican Congressman Mike Rogers of Saks that the center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston will not be used as a processing facility.  Rogers had previously blasted the Obama Administration for considering the FEMA facility in Anniston as a possible site to house the young illegal immigrants.

AEA Funds

The main funding source for one of the largest and best financed organizations in the state, the Alabama Education Association, has ended.  The organization is no longer able to use payroll deductions to collect dues to support its activities.  AEA had a court-approved deadline of Monday to comply with a newly enforced state law on limiting payroll deductions.  An AEA spokeswoman says the organization is working to convert its 95,000 members  to bank drafts.  The law's sponsor, Senator Del Marsh of Anniston, says taxpayers shouldn't pay to collect dues for a political organization.

The Hyundai car brand continues to attract buyers, the auto company set another sales record in June, the best sales month ever in its 28-year history.  Hyundai said June sales were led by the Montgomery-made Sonata car.  67,407 Sonata cars were sold last month.  Hyundai Motor America also reported its best six month sales period in its history.
