Mel Marshall

Announcer and Host

In February 2014, Mel Marshall retired as Program Director at WVAS-FM 90.7 after over 30-years of exemplary service to Alabama State University.  Mel started at the WVAS-FM 90.7 in March, 1983.  Mel never said he was finished with radio, just that he needed a break.  Mel explains that, “After hundreds of students many days getting up at 3 a.m. in Tuskegee to start the WVAS morning show at 6 a.m. for 30-years, I needed a break just from getting up so early.”

Mel was also the announcer for the Mighty Marching Hornets for 28-years and along the way in 2013 received the prestigious distinction of being inducted into the Alabama Broadcasting Hall of Fame-only the third African-American to be so honored in Alabama.

To all of Mel’s fans, he’s back hosting his own show-and doing mid-morning’s on WVAS-Mel Marshall’s Blues every Friday night 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., the show repeats Saturday morning 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. featuring new music, old music-stuff mama and daddy used to listen to including interviews with some of the top Blues artists in the country-and comedy. You can’t help but love it!

Mel also hosts Jazzcapades weekdays 9 a.m. to noon with that voice that will make you feel that Mel is right there talking to you…so let’s enjoy this go around like the last go around and let’s all say, “Mel Marshall Is Back!!!!”
