(AP) - Officials in Gulf Shores have been told that government auditors want the city to return nearly $9.8 million used for cleanup after Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has scrutinized city records for more than a year. On Thursday, Gulf Shores received official notice that the government's auditors have recommended that the Federal Emergency Management Agency seek repayment of $9.73 million paid to the city
Montgomery, Alabama – Montgomery Mayor-elect Todd Strange takes the oath of office this afternoon. The swearing in ceremony will get underway at 3 o'clock at the Gateway Park Lodge. Strange won the seat after defeating five other candidates in the special election held back on March 11th. Strange replaces interim Mayor Charles Jinright who returns to his position with the Montgomery City Council.
Montgomery, Alabama – (AP) - Several groups that hold bingo games to raise money for their charitable causes aren't happy about a proposed state law that would limit electronic bingo. The law would limit electronic bingo to 10 electronic bingo halls in seven Alabama counties.
Montgomery, Alabama – Montgomery County Board of Education Superintendent John Dilworth is leaving Montgomery after accepting a new job in Louisiana. Beginning July 1st, Dilworth will serve as superintendent for the East Baton Rouge School Board. Dilworth has spent 27 years in education, 17 of them in Caddo Parish schools in Shreveport. He has spent the past two years as the superintendent in Montgomery. Dilworth says his wife's health concerns and family ties prompted his bid to return to Louisiana.
Montgomery,Alabama – An Opelika man joins his brother behind bars charged in Sunday's murder of a man at a local nightclub. Opelika police say 24-year-old Cortney Lashavious Wright is charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Justin Lydell Bryant. Authorities say the victim was slain outside the VFW Club. Cortney Wright's brother, 22-year-old Renza Danielle Wright, was arrested March 15th shortly after the homicide. The siblings were being held at the Lee County Detention Facility.
New York – DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - There are 16 more first-round games scheduled for today's second day of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Louisville, the top seed overall, sees its first action this evening when it plays Morehead State, the winner of the play-in game Tuesday night.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The biggest upset on opening day of the tournament belonged to Western Kentucky. The 12th-seeded Hilltoppers beat fifth-seed Illinois 76-72 in the South Regional and will take on Gonzaga next.
Montgomery, Alabama – Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputies have one man in custody in the double murders in Ramer. 29 year old Courtney Nobles is behind bars charged with the murders of Mark Teague and Kenneth Ray Johnson. Deputies are still looking for 28 year old Derrick Jones who also faces murder charges.
Sheriff's officials say Teague and Johnson were shot to death outside a home on Sugar Cane Road in Ramer around 8:15 Wednesday night following an argument.
