Two stone markers have been preserved inside the renovated Kress building as a reminder of the city’s segregated past. A ceremony for the opening of Kress on Dexter today unveiled the markers, leftover from the original structure – built in 1929. Inscribed with the words “colored” and “white,” the markers instructed use of Kress water fountains. Co-owner of the building Sarah Buller says the decision was made early in the development to keep and preserve the markers.
