Qualifying has closed for the Alabama Democratic and Republican parties in the race for state’s Senate District 26 seat, which Quinton Ross just vacated to take over as President of Alabama State University. Five candidates have qualified on the Democratic side while just one is running from the Republican Party. Democratic candidates include Deborah Anthony, Fred Bell, David Burkette, Tony Cobb Jr. and John Knight. DJ Johnson is the GOP’s nominee. The special primary election is set for Dec. 12. A runoff would be held Feb. 27 if needed. 

Making Contact: Mrs. Hamer, Echoes Airs Tonight

Tonight's regularly scheduled program Biz Talk MGM is taking a break for the Columbus Day holiday. In place of it, WVAS will broadcast a half-hour special "Mrs. Hamer, Echoes" part of the Making Contact series, a weekly magazine/documentary style public affairs program distributed through Public Radio Exchange. The program examines the words and brief context of the life of civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer,  who would have turned 100 on October 6.

Hurricane Nate brought a burst of flooding and power outages to the U.S. Gulf Coast before weakening rapidly Sunday, sparing the region the kind of catastrophic damage left by a series of hurricanes that hit the southern U.S. and Caribbean in recent weeks. In Central Alabama the damage came in the form of downed trees and power outages. Some of those downed trees hit structures, but fortunately there have been no reports of injuries or loss of life from the storm in Alabama. At its peak, the storm caused outages to more than 14-thousand homes in this part of the state.

   A change of leadership in the Athletics Department at Alabama State University. Director of Athletics Melvin Hines has officially resigned from the position. President Quinton Ross last night issued a statement announcing that Deputy Director of Athletics Jennifer Lynne Williams will take over as interim director. She will begin her new duties immediately. In his statement, Dr. Ross said the university is fortunate to have someone of Williams’s caliber to step in.

November 13,2008 – Consumers are enjoying lower gas prices with regular unleaded gasoline at its lowest amounts around the state since 2006. AAA Alabama is offering tips to get the best mileage possible.

November 12,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis says the rumors are just that, rumors, and he is not considering serving as U.S. Attorney General. Davis says he will announce early next year definitive plans on whether he will run for Governor of Alabama. On another note, Davis will participate in an upcoming Time magazine panel discussion this weekend about the publication's "Person of the Year".

November 11,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis tells WVAS news he will have an announcement to make early next year. That response when we questioned Davis about reported plans to run for Governor. Selma based Zeigler is recalling its more than 28,000 pounds of hot dogs fearing contamination. Zeigler officials say the hot dogs produced on September 22nd may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause a potentially deadly disease called Listeriosis.

November 7,2008 – Stories making Headlines this hour in the WVAS Newsroom: President Elect Barack Obama prepares to speak to the nation via his first news conference since Tuesday. WVAS news will carry his comments live beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Montgomery Police Officer injured in a robbery shooting Wednesday remains in stable condition this morning. Meanwhile, three of the suspects in the robbery are charged with murder in connection with the death of a fellow robbery suspect.

November 6,2008 – From the WVAS Newsroom, our top story this hour: A Montgomery Police Officer is hospitalized in stable condition following a shooting overnight in North Montgomery. Police were called to a home on North Pass Road with reports of a home invasion robbery around 7:30 last night. Shots were fired, and reportedly three people were injured, with an unidentified Montgomery Police Officer listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

November 6,2008 – Our top story this hour: Montgomery Police have three men in custody and a fourth suspect is dead in connection with the shooting overnight that sent a Montgomery Police Officer to the hospital. The unidentified Police Officer, according to police spokesman Lt. Keith B. Barnett, is listed in stable condition.

Dr. Howard Robinson is a Historian and Archivist for the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University who believes the historical aspect of the election will resonate for quite while ,especially in the South.

November 4,2008 – Record voter turnout predicted for today's election cycle; so far,no reports of any major problems at the polls. The Secretary of State's Office predicts Alabama will break its old turnout record of 76 percent set in the 1992 presidential race.
